In 1971, Mercury was invited by his friend of art study and college roommate, Tim Stafl, to replace him as the lead singer in his band, "Smile"where he met the guitarist Brian May and the drummer Roger Taylor. With his joining the band as well as  the joining of the  bassist John Deacon, Mercury took command as the colorful, leading figure. He suggested changing the name of the band to “Queen”, and over time the band's reputation grew.

With a wide vocal range and somewhat operatic technique, Mercury was one of the varied singers and had the best technique in pop and rock that were published by “Queen”. In addition to vocal abilities, he was known as "stage animal", which contributed a lot to  the band's publicity. On stages, turning up in fancy dress (that suggested many of his sexual orientation, which has never officially acknowledged) combined with his explosive energy, he was considered one of the legendary performers in the music world. What kept this reputation throughout his career, was the fact that he adapted himself the looks for each period: If in the seventies he danced on stages with long hair, wearing tight tights, in the eighties he made a sharp turn to “macho” in order to  suit the period (including short hair and a bushy mustache).
