In addition to his work with “Queen”, Mercury published two solo albums: "Mr. Bad Guy" in 1985 and "Barcelona" in 1988, which were not considered as a commercial success. "Barcelona" was a collaboration with the Catalan soprano Montserrat Kabayeh, and was one of the first albums that combined elements of pop music and opera ( the theme song from the album was the theme song for the Olympics in Barcelona  in 1992).

As a solo singer, one of his hit songs was the cover to the song "The Great Pretender", but it was only after his death, that he won the first place in the hit parades  with a remix version of the song "Living On My Own" (which was a huge success in the UK).

Kabayeh told about him: "He was not just a rock star, he was a musician with unusual composition capabilities. He discovered a new way to combine different music styles together, and is the first and only person who made it."

In honor of his sixtieth birthday event, a collection which included Mercury's solo career was released in the UK.

Over the years, a rare solo albums like the Japanese edition of the single song "Guide Me Home", have gained memorabilia value (now worth about 1,000 pounds). Mercury and Michael Jackson performed several songs (that were never officially published) together, including "There Must Be More To Life Than This" and "State of Shock". Mercury was also planning the show up in the most successful album of Michael Jackson, Thriller, but the plan was not carried out.
